NOAA Hurricane Plane

This image was taken from the inside of Miss Piggy, one of the Lockheed WP-3D Orion aircraft flown by the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center. These hurricane hunter aircraft play an integral role in hurricane forecasting and routinely fly through the storms. The data gathered by the aircraft is used to help predict how powerful a hurricane will be and where it will make landfall.

The NOAA Aircraft Operation Center is located at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. The aircraft are temporarily based at the US Coast Guard facility at the Clearwater International Airport.
